SLAM is a student-run organization at UCLA that recruits volunteers to serve as instructors in after-school music classes at local underserved elementary, middle, and high schools. Our mission is to provide all students with accessible, contemporary and tuition-free music instruction. Every day of the week, SLAM sends a group of volunteers to a middle or high school to teach music classes.
Our program is delivered through a network of volunteer college students, creating opportunities for mentorship and professional development through a shared experience of music. Volunteers go through an application and interview process that evaluates their leadership, teamwork, and teaching abilities. Once selected and trained, volunteers teach weekly courses in guitar, piano, voice, percussion, or ukulele.
SLAM seeks to empower college and K-12 students via music. UCLA students remain musically involved throughout their college careers while leaving a positive impact on the lives of students who would otherwise lack access to musical instruments and instruction. Our students learn that they can take charge of their education as they shape their own musical path.
